There are over 100 recognised sleep disorders, which involve much more than having trouble falling asleep. Sleep disorders can be grouped into four categories..

Problems with falling and/or staying asleep of which Insomnia is the most common. The term Insomnia encompasses trouble falling asleep and trouble staying asleep. It includes intermittent wakefulness and waking early in the morning


Problems staying awake generally known as hypersomnia which includes

Sleep Apnea prevents people from breathing correctly during sleep, the intermittent cessation of breathing causes the sufferer to wake many times per night.
Narcolepsy is an overwhelming excessive daytime sleepiness.


Problems Having a Normal Sleep Schedule. This sleep disorder is commonly seen in shift workers following a shift rotation. Another example is Jet Lag when a person travels between time zones


Sleep disruption behaviour or parasomnias describes abnormal behaviour during sleep and encompasses

Bruxism: the grinding of the teeth
Sleepwalking: engaging in activities that are usually associated with being awake..
Sleep terrors: the sudden awakening with a feeling of fear and confusion, sweating and rapid heart beat.

Sleep disruption behaviour most commonly affects pre-teen children

Pain, including Back or neck pain and Sciatica
Environmental Noise
Various Drugs
Endocrine imbalance
Circadian rhythm disorders
